Helmut Neddens

Helmut Neddens wurde in einer musikalischen Familie geboren und ist im Kreis vieler Geschwister aufgewachsen. Für einige Jahre übte er Musik (Klavier, Geige und Orgelspiel) autodidaktisch aus. Nach dem Theologiestudium ging er (verheiratet, mit Kindern) nach Südafrika und war dort hauptberuflich als Pfarrer tätig. Nebenbei studierte er an der Universität von Südafrika Musikwissenschaft. Für viele Jahre bekam er Klavier-, Bratschen- und Flötenunterricht. Neben „Harmony and Counterpoint“ und „History of Music” als Hauptfächer studierte er Music Form, Ethnomusicology, The Physics of Music und Musik Bibliothekswesen. 1986 bekam er das Musik- (Instrumental-) -lehrer Diplom “Teacher’ Licenciate of Music” der Universität von Südafrika zuerkannt.

Danach arbeitete er nebenberuflich als Musiklehrer an der staatlichen Musikschule in Pinetown und an der Universität von Durban-Westville. Er gründete und leitete in Südafrika mehrere Ensembles: u.a. das Da Camera Ensemble in Pretoria, das Rococo Chambre Ensemble in Durban und das Bergtheil Ensemble in Durban. Außerdem leitete er als Bratschist das „Festival Strings Quartet“ in Durban. In die Durbaner Zeit (1985-1998) fällt auch die Zusammenarbeit mit D’urban Arts (eine Einrichtung der Stadt Durban), mit Mitgliedern des Natal Philharmonic Orchestras und vielen professionellen Musikern der Region. Zu den Höhepunkten dieser Zeit zählen live Kammermusik-Sendungen im südafrikanischen Rundfunk (SABC) und eine Konzertreise als Bratschist im Streichquartet mit dem Konzertmeister des Natal Philharmonic Orchestra Hristo Kardiev nach Indien im Jahr 1998. Außerdem fanden zahlreiche Konzerte mit lokalen Musikgruppen im Raum Durban/Natal statt (u.a. Durban Boys’ Choir, Durban Men’s Choir, Durban City Orchestra).

Nach seiner Rückkehr nach Deutschland 1998 gründete er 1999 in Braunschweig die CAMERATA NOVA BRAUNSCHWEIG. Sie hat es sich zur Aufgabe gemacht, hauptsächlich Kammermusik des Barock, der Klassik und der neueren Zeit zur Aufführung zu bringen. Konzerte finden hauptsächlich im norddeutschen Raum statt. In den vergangen Jahren gab es jedoch auch Konzertreisen nach Südafrika, Polen, Dänemark, Frankreich (Elsaß), Südost-Deutschland und Tschechien. Der Name CAMERATA NOVA BRAUNSCHWEIG soll vorerst bestehen bleiben. Im Mai 2010 wurde das 10jährige Jubiläum dieser Camerata mit einem Jubiläumskonzert in der Paul-Gerhardt-Kirche in Braunschweig gefeiert.

Helmut Neddens was born and grew up in a large musical family in Northern Germany. 
In his youth, for some years he practiced music (piano, violin and organ) self-taught. After school he studied theology and married. The couple had/have three children. At age about 27 the family went to South Africa where Helmut Neddens worked as a church minister in the Lutheran Church. His interest of music stayed alive. Living in Pretoria, he studied part time musicology at the University of South Africa. His main subjets were Harmony & Counterpoint. Other subjets were music history, Music Form, Ethnomusicology and the Physics of Music as well as Music library science. He also had intensive piano and recorder lessons. In 1986 he optained the diploma "Teacher's Licenciate of Music" from the University of South Africa (UNISA). In the meantime, the family had moved to Durban, at the Indian Ocean. Subsequently, he then worked part time as music lecturer at the Pinetown Music School and the  University of Durban-Westville.
While living in South Africa, Helmut Neddens founded and led a number of ensembles, e.g. the "Festival Strings Quartet" in Durban. Also being a competent viola player, he led this quartet for about ten years. These activities culminated in a concert tour to India with the concert master of the Natal Philharmonic Orchestra in 1998. Helmut Neddens also worked together with the D'urban Arts Association, an official art organisation of the municipality of the city of Durban. He organised a great number of concerts, for instance with the Durban Boys' Choir, Durban Men's Choir und the Durban City Orchestra.

After his return to Germany he founded in 1999 in Braunschweig the CAMERATA NOVA BRAUNSCHWEIG, a chamber music group. Under this name Helmut Neddens continued to give chamber music concerts in Germany, especially in Northern Germany. These activities, however, included also a number of concert tours to Poland, South Africa, Denmark as well as France (Elsace).

At present, Helmut Neddens lives in Verden/Aller (Northern Germany, near Bremen) where he continues to present concerts. He works as a music teacher (Flute and Recorder) at the "Evangelische Gemeinde-Musikschule Con-Takte" in Verden. 

He conceives himself a a communicator between generations, different people of different nations and backgrounds and endevours to build bridges between people, whoever and wherever they are. To achieve this, music is the means.
